Service: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Employment Type: Fixed-Term (3, 6, or 12 months)
About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Locum Consultant Neonatologist to join our team at Dunedin Hospital’s tertiary-level NICU. This fixed-term position is available for durations of 3, 6, or 12 months, offering a balanced mix of clinical service, on-call responsibilities, and outpatient follow-up care. You will be part of a collaborative team providing high-quality, family-centred care to neonates requiring intensive and high-dependency support, including extremely preterm infants and those with complex medical or surgical needs.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide consultant-level care in a 12-bed tertiary NICU, including oversight of neonatal resuscitation, ventilation, and complex case management.
• Participate in a 1 in 5 equally shared on-call roster, including approximately 10 weekends per year.
• Undertake approximately 24 weeks of inpatient service per year, pro-rated for the term of the appointment.
• Conduct monthly NICU neurodevelopmental and follow-up clinics during non-service weeks.
• Supervise and support junior medical staff, neonatal nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals.
• Contribute to quality improvement, clinical governance, and multidisciplinary education.
• Engage in research and academic activities in collaboration with the University of Otago, if desired.
• Work within a two-consultant service model each week: one consultant manages admitted NICU patients, including daily ward rounds, multidisciplinary meetings, and family support; the other consultant oversees acute NICU admissions, attends high-risk deliveries, and supervises the postnatal ward.
About You
• Vocational registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Medical Council of New Zealand in Paediatrics with a subspecialty in Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine.
• Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience in tertiary-level neonatal intensive care.
• Strong commitment to teamwork, teaching, and continuous improvement.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

With a vibrant university culture, stunning natural surroundings, and a strong sense of community, it’s an ideal place to live and work.
