| Abstract | Decision support systems (DSS) are thought to be unsuitable for modeling clinical problems that require rapid decision making on the part of the clinician. This study addresses the issue of clinical problem identification for development of a decision support system (DSS) in a neonatal intensive care setting (NICU). A model of decision making strategies for triaging emergency calls for medical help using levels of urgency as a categorization system is demonstrated and applied to problem identification in the NICU. Fifteen clinical problems experienced by preterm infants in the NICU are identified and categorized by levels of urgency. The clinical problems requiring decision-making strategies under conditions of moderate to low-level urgency were determined to be suitable for DSS development. |
