Abstract Departmental Information Systems (DIS) do not need to be large in order to be useful. Using fourth-generation software (AIDA) a small DIS can be developed in a matter of months. One example of such a small DIS is the system developed for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. A brief description of the system is followed by an overview of how the system is used in the Dept. of Pediatrics, for the evaluation of patient care, and for research.
