Abstract An IBM 1800 computer was used to monitor, record, and provide therapy in a 4-bed surgical intensive care unit. The computer acquired data directly from monitors, generated pre-op and post-op orders based on the patient's surface area, and automatically controlled intravenous infusions of fluids, blood, and mannitol.
