Abstract The authors describe a mobile data acquisition system based on an Apple II computer, dual floppy disk drives, a thermal printer, an analog-to-digital converter, a Validyne transducer control system and pressure transducers, and isolation transformers. The system was used for bedside estimation of arterial blood gases through the skin with a mass spectrometer, measurements of mechanical properties of the lungs, chest wall, and diaphragm, and analysis of respiratory muscle electromyograms.
