Abstract This chapter describes the development and operation of a bedside real-time patient data management system in the Perinatology Center at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, which has been in operation since 1976. The system was cost-justified to hospital administration on the basis of the elimination of manual charting of lab results and the elimination of keypunching in favor of generation of a magnetic tape for laboratory test billing. Special emphasis is placed on how the author approached the problems of user acceptance and optimal use.
