| Abstract | We have recently reported a computerized system for recording and reporting data on high-risk newborn infants that substantially reduced data base error and medical staff paperwork time through automatic computer production of discharge summaries and letters to community physicians and agencies. Of remaining errors, 64% were attributable to transfer of data onto computer cards (keypunching) prior to entry into the computer. In addition, special computer programs had to be created each time information was requested from the computer for research or administrative purposes. Over 80% of reported system operation cost was attributable to keypunching and this method of data abstraction. To address these problems, an on-line computer system in which data may be entered onto and recovered directly from the computer by medical staff without the need for keypunching or computer specialists, was developed. |
